September Half-Time Show

I know you signed up for a monthly email, but I hope you’ll indulge me and be open to an occasional mid-month check-in. Sometimes, I come across a book I’m dying to share with you, but it doesn’t fit into an upcoming monthly theme, and I just can’t wait that long! Or, there may be some time-sensitive bookish news to share—like this month. These updates will be short, informal, and cover various topics. So, without further ado, here it goes:

Sandwich by Catherine Newman
If you read Newman’s first book, the delightful, heartbreaking ode to female friendship, We All Want Impossible Things, then you’ll want to read Sandwich for that reason alone. And if you’re sandwich generationing (and/or peri/menopausing) between children who are growing up and parents who are growing old, and it feels like a lot, then you’ll appreciate this short, bittersweet read. I’m thinking of adding it to a list of Menopause Reads, but that probably won’t be until next year, and I wanted to share it with you sooner rather than later!

If you’ve read, or want to read, The Husbands by Holly Gramazio or Nita Prose’s Maid books, and you’re in Vancouver – which I know a lot of you are – then you may be as excited as me to know that both these authors will be at the Vancouver Writers Festival in October.  Gramazio will participate in events #16 and #55 and Prose in events #12 and #29 (I’ve bolded the events I’m going to). There are so many great authors and events during the festival, but I’m focusing on the ones related to books I’ve recommended so far. And while I’m obviously an online person, when it comes to the Writers Fest I find it easier to pick up a paper program to plan my must-attend events. Rumour has it that you can find them at JJ Bean.

Until October’s 4th newsletter!
